Sunderland‘s Europa League gauntlet will see them travel to face Lech Poznan on October 22, and fans are sure to pack out the best pubs in Poznan to enjoy a pre-match pint.

The Black Cats' supporters will find plenty to do in the city, from its Old Market Square to the Croissant Museum, and should take the time to enjoy the architecture, culture and culinary delights.

Poznan boasts some of the most highly-regarded places to grab a bite to eat in west Poland, and is full of unique spots to check out, including both Soviet-era antiquities and modern sports bars.

However, those lucky enough to have tickets to the match should keep in mind that the majority of the notable spots are found around the Old Town and city centre.

Best pubs in Poznan's Old Town and city centre

Cooliozum – Swiety Marcin 45, 61-806 Poznan, Poland (through the archway, take the stairs on your left)

Located in the city centre, Cooliozum is considered Poznan's best sports bar, and comes as a welcome surprise to visitors who are expecting a dingy watering hole based on the fact it is found in a cellar off the main road.

Cooliozum features 23 televisions – enough for everyone to enjoy a match – and an interior decorated with white sofas and blue lighting at the bar, which has 14 beers on tap, though more than 120 are on offer. There are also a great selection of board games, as well as both darts and foosball.

Brovaria – Stary Rynek 73/74, 61-772 Poznan, Poland

Brovaria is Poznan's first restaurant-brewery, and can be found in part of a complex including a hotel right by the Old Market Square.

This spot is renowned for its freshly-brewed beer, and boasts an extensive outdoor garden as well as four interior rooms – the Main Beer Hall (up to 180 seats), Bar (65 seats), Lunch Room (70 seats), and Basement (50 seats). The specialty dishes served here often include Brovaria's own beer in the recipe.

Pijalnia Wodki i Piwa – Stary Rynek 85, 61-773 Poznan, Poland

Pijalnia Wodki i Piwa is a popular bar with a nostalgic communist-era concept located in Stary Rynek, near the city centre.

A simple place to drink at its core, fans will enjoy the cheap beer available, as well as the cheap food on offer, including pickled herring. Make sure to check out karaoke nights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Visitors hoping to drink somewhere more ‘authentically Polish' should head to Pijalnia Wodki I Piwa, which is known for standing in contrast to some of the more upmarket spots in the area.

Proletaryat – Wroclawska 9, 61-838 Poznan, Poland

Proletaryat is a stylish, soviet-themed bar with a nostalgic feel that serves an extensive list of drinks, including local beers from Czarnkow Brewery.

Visitors will be struck by the Communist-era decor, which features a massive bust of Lenin that stares out at passerby, as well as a whole host of Cold War memorabilia and social realist paintings, alongside portraits of Lenin and Marx.

Piwna Stopa – Szewska 7, 61-760 Poznan, Poland

A great pick for any visitors that are looking for craft beers in Poznan, Piwna Stopa is a charming spot for enthusiasts to savour.

With 16 taps and over 200 different beers from around the world available, visitors are sure to find something to suit their tastes. Piwna Stopa also serve spirits, wine and mead, as well as quality food options, including game hot dogs (mushroom variants are offered as a vegetarian alternatives) and pulled pork.

Best places to eat in Poznan's Old Town and city centre

Wiejskie Jadlo – Stary Rynek 77 /wejscie od, Franciszkanska, 61-772 Poznan, Poland

Wiejskie Jadlo in the Old Town area is a popular restaurant that serves traditional dishes, specialising in classic Polish cuisine such as kwasnica, borscht, golonka, bigos and pierogi.

The combination of old-school food with a wood-laden rustic interior helps to create a memorable atmosphere that feels as if you have been transported to a bygone era.

One tip shared by visitors to Wiejskie Jadlo is to use the Franciszkanska street entrance, rather than the one on the square itself, as the queue is quicker.

Whiskey in the Jar – Stary Rynek 100, 61-772 Poznan, Poland

Whiskey in the Jar is a popular rock-themed steakhouse that specialises in American-style food, and is also known for its live music, cocktails and ‘proprietary' drinks.

The burgers are often given rave reviews, as are the atmosphere and staff, who are confident English speakers. It is recommended that visitors book in advance if heading to the Whiskey in the Jar on Stary Rynek, as it is regularly busy.
