Nick Pope made a name for himself in Premier League football with Burnley, which earned him a move to Newcastle in 2022, where he has gone on to play Champions League football and win silverware.

The former Burnley shot stopper has enjoyed a great relationship with the Newcastle faithful since moving to the North East, to the point where they almost gave up on the 2023 Carabao Cup final when he was ruled out through suspension.

The Nick Pope chant, created and sung by Newcastle fans, is one of those that is more common in pubs and bars than at St James' Park, but it is unique in its own right.

Nick Pope chant, lyrics and tune

The Nick Pope chant is sung to the tune of ‘Our House' by Madness. The lyrics are as follows:

Nick Pope,

In the middle of our goal,

Nick Pope,

In the middle of our goal

Nick Pope chant background

As mentioned above, the Nick Pope chant isn't one that you expect to hear during a match at St James' Park, but it is one that usually gets a few laughs in the pubs surrounding the stadium and in the centre of Newcastle on matchday.

The chant was created shortly after Pope signed for the club. For context, he replaced Martin Dubravka as the club's number one goalkeeper, and given the mistakes that Dubravka used to make, the reliable hands of Pope were just what the doctor ordered.

With respect to the lyrics, they are fairly self-explanatory. Nick Pope, in the middle of our goal – Yes, that is where goalkeepers tend to stand!

FGG says: A gimmicky chant

Sometimes, these gimmicky chants are better than the anthems that are well-known in stadiums. The Nick Pope in the middle of our goal chant could soon reverberate around St James' Park, though, as there are suggestions that the goalkeeper's time at Newcastle could be nearing its end. Aaron Ramsdale has been signed, and it will only be a matter of time until it is he who is in the middle of Newcastle's goal.
