Roy Keane has become a bit of a cult hero in English football for his punditry work in recent years; however, it's important that we remember that during his playing days, he was one of the best midfielders ever to grace the Premier League.

Starting off as a marauding midfielder for Nottingham Forest, Keane spent the bulk of his career with Manchester United, where he picked up countless trophies as the club captain.

The Manchester United faithful fell in love with Keane almost instantly. Not only was he equally as good a passer as he was a tackler, but he was also a brilliant captain and leader on the pitch. Many of his teammates have gone on record to say the club wouldn't have won half as many trophies without him, which is a testament to his influence.

Below, we're going to look at the Roy Keane chant, which is still sung by Man Utd fans today.

Roy Keane chant, lyrics and tune

The Roy Keane chant is sung to the tune of ‘My Old Man's a Dustman' by Lonnie Donegan. It is the same tune now used by Arsenal fans for their Gabriel Jesus chant.

Keano's f***ing magic,

He wears a magic hat,

And when he saw Old Trafford,

He said, ‘I fancy that',

He didn't sign for Arsenal or Blackburn ‘cos they're s***e,

He signed for Man Utd, ‘cos we're f***ing dynamite

Roy Keane chant background

The Roy Keane chant was the first one used in English football to this tune, and it didn't take too long for the United faithful to add it to their impressive songbook.

Keane hit the ground running at Old Trafford, and there was pressure on him as he signed for a British transfer record fee at the time.

The song references the fact that he turned down a string of clubs to sign for Man Utd, including Blackburn, who were throwing money at a lot of players back in the early-mid 1990s, and Arsenal, who were Man Utd's biggest rivals at the time.

FGG says: Keano was/is magic

You know you're a club legend when the fans are still singing your football chant almost on a weekly basis 20 years after you left. Keane's ending at Man Utd may have been sour on his end, but there is almost nothing the man could do at this point to turn the United faithful away from him.
