The Sven Botman chant first started to circulate around St James' Park during the early stages of the 2023/24 season, around the same time that the Dutchman scored his first goal for the club as part of their 8-0 demolition of Sheffield United in September 2023.
Given the links to darts, it is somewhat surprising that the chant wasn't created around the Christmas period when darts becomes one of the most popular sports in the United Kingdom each year.
The reason for choosing the darts anthem, beyond it simply being a good tune for a football chant, could be linked to Botman's heritage. Darts is a huge sport in the Netherlands, as can be evidenced by the likes of Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld becoming household names in the country.
