Broadhurst Park

A trip to Broadhurst Park is one many non-league football fans look out for on fixture release day because of the fanfare surrounding FC United of Manchester.

For those who don’t know, FC United was formed in 2005 by Manchester United supporters in a protest against the Glazer Family’s purchase of the club. In the years since, the club have risen through non-league football, remaining loyal to their principles of 100% fan ownership throughout.

The atmosphere at Broadhurst Park is consistently excellent, and the old-school Manchester United chants that are thrown in every now and then are all part and parcel of the matchday experience.

There is no fixed away end at Broadhurst Park, meaning away fans are free to sit or stand where they want. Generally, both sets of supporters will swap ends at half-time, so they are in the terrace their team are attacking throughout the match.

Away fans are made to feel welcome at Broadhurst Park, and it is an easy part of Manchester to get in and out of.

The best views of the pitch at Broadhurst Park are in the Main Stand, which runs along one side. This is the biggest stand in the stadium and the only one with seats, making it the most comfortable. This stand is on the same side as the dugouts and also contains the press box and hospitality areas.

If you are more concerned about being in and amongst the atmosphere at Broadhurst Park, you are going to want to stand in either the Lightbowne Road End or the St. Mary’s Road End. Both of these stands are covered terraces.

The primary food location at Broadhurst Park is in the north-east corner of the stadium, where a fixed chippy previously stood. In recent seasons, this chippy has been removed, and now the club brings in different food vendors for each home game to add variety.

One of the most popular vendors is Mamma Chilli’s, which serves loaded fries and chilli bowls.

In terms of a pre- and/or post-match pint, fans can head to the bar underneath the Main Stand, which has a variety of lagers and ales on offer, in addition to soft drinks.

If you want to grab a bite to eat nearby, the following places are all within a mile of the stadium and offer excellent food.

Alternatively, you can get a tram from Newton Heath and Moston to Manchester City Centre and enjoy the endless list of restaurants there.

By car

From the north

Leave the M60 at junction 20 and head down the A664. When you reach the traffic lights, turn left onto the A6104 and then, at the Greengate roundabout, take the fourth exit onto Lightbowne Road. After around 0.5 miles, the ground will appear on your left.

From the south

Leave the M60 at junction 22 and continue onto Hollinwood Avenue. At the Greengate Roundabout, take the first exit onto Lightbowne Road. After around 0.5 miles, the ground will appear on your left.

By public transport

Fans can use the Manchester Metrolink on the Rochdale-East Didsbury line to get to Broadhurst Park. You should depart at Newton Heath & Moston and then embark on a 20-minute walk to the stadium.

Alternatively, fans can get a train to Moston Railway Station. From here, the ground is just a 10-minute walk away.

Broadhurst Park has an official capacity of 4,900. This has been the same since it opened in May 2015, and there are no plans for expansion at this stage.

When FC United were formed in 2005, they didn’t have a permanent home and originally played home matches across multiple venues, including Parrs Wood High School and Leigh RMI’s ground.

Eventually, FCUM reached a deal with Bury to ground-share Gigg Lane, where the club enjoyed its golden period as it rose through the non-league pyramid.

The club’s ambition was always to establish a permanent home of its own. An earlier proposal to build a stadium at Ten Acres Lane in Newton Heath received planning approval in 2010, but the project ultimately fell through.

FC United then turned its attention to a site in Moston, with supporters playing a major role in raising the money needed for construction through fundraising and a pioneering community-share scheme.

Broadhurst Park opened in May 2015. The official opening was celebrated with a match against Benfica, while the first competitive fixture followed in August 2015 against Stockport County.
