Football grounds with road in the title: How 13 became seven

There are over 100 professional football stadiums in England and with many clubs now selling the naming rights to their stadiums, the number of grounds with their traditional names are decreasing by the year.

That means that the number of football grounds with road in the title is also decreasing. A couple of decades ago the figure stood at 13 but it has now decreased to just seven. For more information on each one, check out the guide below.

Football grounds with road in the title: The current seven

Bloomfield Road

Bloomfield Road is the home of Blackpool Football Club and has been since 1901. Prior to that, the ground was known as Gamble's Field, named after the farmer who owned the land, and was the home ground of South Shore in the Lancashire League. The current capacity of Bloomfield Road is 16,616 but its record attendance is 30,098.

Carrow Road

Carrow Road is the home of Norwich City and has been since 1935. Like the vast majority of stadiums on the list, it is named after the road it is situated on. Incredibly, Carrow Road was originally built in just 82 days by Norwich City proving that modern-day multi-year stadium builds are perhaps a little over the top.

Elland Road

Elland Road is perhaps the most famous stadium in England with road in its title and is the home of Leeds United. The club have played their home matches here for the entirety of their history so the ground has a special place in the hearts of Leeds fans of all ages. Elland Road was originally called the Old Peacock Ground, named after the pub opposite the stadium.

Kenilworth Road

Kenilworth Road was trusted into the limelight when Luton were promoted to the Premier League in 2023 thanks in large to the entrance to the away end which looks like the front of someone's house. Luton have played here since 1905 but they could be on the move soon to a new ground called Power Court.

MATRADE Loftus Road Stadium

The MATRADE Loftus Road Stadium is quite rare in that it is a stadium that has had its name changed due to a sponsorship deal but still retained the word ‘road' in its title. The stadium is more commonly known as ‘Loftus Road' and is the home of QPR. The ground made history inĀ 1981 when it became the first professional stadium in England to install an artificial pitch.

Portman Road

Portman Road is the home of Ipswich Town and has a current capacity of 30,014. In the summer of 2024, Portman Road became a Premier League stadium once again following Ipswich's promotion to the Premier League. The club have played their home matches at Portman Road since 1884 and look to stay put for the foreseeable future.

Vicarage Road

Vicarage Road is the final stadium in England that still has the word road in its title and is the home of Watford FC. The club have played at the stadium since 1922 but prior to that, they enjoyed 32 years at Cassio Road. Despite the club's well-documented financial woes, they are yet to sell the naming rights to the stadium.

Football grounds that used to have road in the title

Brisbane Road (Gaughan Group Stadium)

The Gaughan Group Stadium is the current home of Leyton Orient but to many people, the ground will always be known as Brisbane Road. However, that isn't the only previous name that the stadium has had with the club's owners more than happy to auction the name of the ground to the highest bidder. Previous names including The Matchroom Stadium and the Breyer Group Stadium.

Gresty Road (Mornflake Stadium)

The Mornflake Stadium is the home of Crewe Alexandra but it was known as Gresty Road (or the Alexandra Stadium) from 1906-2021. Then, the naming rights were sold and the stadium became known as the Mornflake Stadium in June 2021. The sponsorship deal was originally meant to run until the end of the 2023/24 season but it has since been extended.

London Road (Weston Homes Stadium)

The Weston Homes Stadium is the home of Peterborough United but is better known as London Road. The naming rights to London Road were first sold off in 2014 when the ground became known as the ABAX Stadium. However, in 2019, Weston Home signed a ten-year deal to give themselves the sponsorship rights to the ground.

Victoria Road (Chigwell Construction Stadium)

The Chigwell Construction Stadium is the home of both Dagenham & Redbridge and West Ham United Women. The stadium is better known as Victoria Road but it has had several name changes over the years due to sponsorship reasons. The current capacity of the stadium is 6,078 and Dagenham & Redbridge look set to stay here for the foreseeable after extending their lease to 2047.

Wetherby Road (Exercise Stadium)

The Exercise Stadium is the current home of Harrogate Town Football Club and is better known as Wetherby Road. The club originally played their home matches at Starbeck Lane but moved to Wetherby Road in 1920. The Exercise Stadium is its current name but it has also been known by two other names in the past – CNG Stadium and EnviroVent Stadium.

Whaddnon Road (EV Charger Points Stadium)

The EV Charger Points Stadium might be the most ridiculous name for a stadium in England but that is what Whaddnon Road is currently officially known as. It is the home ground of Cheltenham Town after a sponsorship deal was signed in July 2024. The ground does have a history of being called ridiculous names, most notably the World of Smile Stadium in 2015/16 and the Jonny-Rocks Stadium in 2018/19.
