Ballon d’Or 2021 odds and tips

As the most prestigious individual award in football, the Ballon d'Or always draws plenty of betting action, and we’ve got some red hot predictions right here.

Preview of the Ballon d’Or rankings and odds (post-Euro update)

Prior to the two huge events last month (Copa America and Euro 2020), the Ballon d’Or rankings looked quite stable. However, surprises came in both events, with many players stepping up to the plate to help their teams do well. This has caused quite a change-up regarding the Ballon d’Or odds and who the likely winner could now be. It’s a fascinating lineup of potential winners, that’s for sure, and below you’ll find information on all likely candidates to lift the trophy.

Lionel Messi

richest footballersWe may as well start with the most likely winner of them all, Lionel Messi. At most betting sites, the odds of Messi winning the trophy for a 7th time are remarkably low, meaning that he’s a red hot favourite. In fact, the Ballon d’Or odds for this man winning are so low that many sites have him floating between the 1.30 and 1.40 mark. Then again, it’s hard to think of anyone who has stepped up more than Messi in recent times – especially since he won his first Copa American with Argentina last month.

And if you watch the highlights, he was in scintillating form too. Having scored 5 goals and been influential in every single game, especially the final against Brazil, he deserves the trophy in our opinion.

Lewandowski (added)

Despite a very average Euro 2020 tournament, Lewandowski is still second in line concerning the Ballon d’or rankings. Many betting sites have him listed around the 7.00 mark, and that in itself tells you just how likely it is that Messi will win the trophy. Lewandowski was joint 7th in terms of the top goalscorers for the Euro 2020 event, but for club football with Bayern, he was heads and shoulders above the rest. He scored an astonishing 41 goals in 29 matches, which meant he scored 13 more goals than the guy in second place. But could this really be enough to win him the Ballon d’Or? We’re not convinced.

Coming in at number three, we have Jorginho – who obviously won the Euro 2020 with his home team of Italy. But that’s not all, Jorginho also managed to win the Champions League this season with Chelsea, playing a pivotal role in beating Manchester City in the final. Needless to say, that’s a fairly decorated season indeed, although we can probably all agree that he wasn’t the absolute best player in either tournament for his respective teams. Then again, you can’t take anything away from the man, hence the 9.00 Ballon d’Or odds that he has at most online bookies.

N’golo Kante

Sliding in at number 4, we have N’golo Kante – another Chelsea man that was part of the Champions League-winning team. Obviously, having a Champions League trophy sitting in your cabinet for the season is something that most players dream about. Although we must question, does this achievement alone overshadow what others have managed to do this season? Of course, that isn’t for us to decide, but in terms of the current Ballon d’Or rankings, we’d say that N’golo deserves his spot in the top five. However, does he really deserve to lift the trophy? It’s a long shot, but he did achieve the man of the match in several important Champions League games.

Also, at 13.00 odds or even higher at some bookmakers, this bet could pay dividends should we say a surprise winner.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane has been the superstar of the English national team ever since his performances in the 2018 World Cup. Of course, he managed to make the final of the Euro 2020 event with England this year, and he did finish with 4 goals – putting him just one shy of the leaders. He also took a brilliant penalty in the pivotal shootout against Italy, even if it came to no avail. To add to this, Kane scored the most goals in the Premier League – netting 23 goals to put him one ahead of his nearest rival, Mo Salah. Oh, and if that wasn’t impressive enough, he also had the most assists in the Premier League with 14.

The only downside for Kane concerning the Ballon d’Or rankings is that he didn’t manage to win the Champions League, the Premier League, or the Euro 2020 Championships. Mind you, the odds do reflect these shortcomings, with Kane having odds around 17.00 at many sites.

Kevin de Bruyne

If you really wanted to play things a little risky, de Bruyne is currently coming in at 21.00 odds at leading bookmakers. Of course, should he win the trophy, this would be an awesome return, but we can’t purely look at the Ballon d’Or odds to decide whether to bet on him or not. We must look at what he has been able to achieve, just like we have with all other players. Besides finishing joint second in terms of Premier League assists this season, de Bruyne hasn’t exactly torn it up on the field. Sure, he’s put in many great performances, but to win the Ballon d’Or, you need to have done something special. He did fantastically well to reach the Champions League final with Manchester City, but his hopes vanished when they were beaten by Chelsea.

And for the Euro 2020 event, it would be fair to say that Belgium underperformed – even if they did lose to the eventual winners in the quarter-finals.

Bonus – Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling may have odds of 21.00 to win the Ballon d'Or, but he is definitely an outside shot. Having made the Champions League final, as well as the Euro 2020 final, he has clearly had a great season of football. And when you look at key players for England, Sterling put all of his international demons to rest in this summer’s event. He was creative, clinical, and clutch when it mattered – definitely a candidate worth thinking about!

Of course, the Ballon d'Or is quite some time away yet, so these odds are likely to change around quite a bit. For that reason, we’d advise that you look into this specific market for the most updated odds before making your wager.

What impacts the Ballon d'Or awards

The Ballon d'Or is the award that is given to the best football player on the planet for the season that has just passed. Of course, this is dependent on many different factors, not just how many times a player hits the back of the net. Historically, this award has regularly gone to prolific goalscorers such as Messi and Ronaldo, but actually, the award isn’t solely given for goals. There are other considerations to also take into consideration, as we’ve identified below.

Team contribution

While football is obviously a team game, there are key individuals that can have a huge impact on the overall success and performances for their teams. This is something that is taken into account for the Ballon d'Or, and it’s something that you should definitely take into account before making your wagers. As a general rule of thumb, it can be a good idea to look for players that would be considered as MVPs for high-profile teams around the world.

Domestic and international form

The great thing about the Ballon d'Or is that it takes into account the performances of an individual during their domestic leagues as well as international competitions. Therefore, it’s important to look for players that have been a part of winning teams, both domestically and internationally. Some key competitions to look out for great individual performances include the Euro Championships, Champions League, and the World Cup.

Individual impact

Although it’s easy to develop a general opinion for an individual's impact, the statistics do not lie. Therefore, you will want proof considering information such as goals scored, clean sheets, number of assists, number of trophies won, and other factors too. These are the easiest areas to look into when trying to predict who will win the Ballon d'Or, and all of this information can be found online.

Preview of the Ballon d'Or 2021 awards

The 2021 Ballon d'Or awards are still quite some time away, so now is a great time to look into the futures markets ahead of the awards night. We’ve listed our tips and predictions for who will win this award already, but now we’d like to actually show you why we’ve made these predictions.

Robert Lewandowski

Let’s be honest – this guy was a red hot favourite to win the Ballon d'Or for 2020, but since the awards were cancelled, he’s probably feeling a bit robbed. Lewandowski was a goal-scoring machine in the Bundesliga and in the Champions League last season, and things are shaping up pretty well for his 2021 season already.

Kylian Mbappe

This rising star has been hailed as the next big thing by many football fans around the world, and he is certainly showing signs of living up to the expectations. The main reason that we feel Mbappe has a shot at the Ballon d'Or is that PSG have started to perform much better in Europe, and he will also be involved in the Euro Championships during the summer of 2021 for France.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo rarely needs any form of introduction these days, especially considering the number of Ball d'Or titles that are already sitting in his trophy cabinet. Much like Mbappe mentioned above, Ronaldo will be involved in the Euro’s this coming summer, and he will also be looking to take Juventus deep into the Champions League too. His goal scoring abilities pretty much speak for themself too.
